To provide crafters worldwide with premium, handcrafted knitting needles, crochet hooks, and knitting machines that make needlework more enjoyable through superior quality and innovative design.
We are a family company that began in 1829 when our founder Peter Heinrich Selter established a crochet hook factory in the basement of a house in Altena, Germany. Originally a wire puller by trade, he used his expertise to craft steel crochet hooks from wire sections. By 1860, our company was already producing around 600 different types of crochet hooks. The business passed through generations of the Selter family, with the company name Gustav Selter established in the late 1800s.
The addi brand name was created in the 1950s alongside our first product catalogs and quickly became recognized worldwide. Today, we operate in our 6th generation as a family business, with 93% of our product range manufactured at our facility in Altena. We ship our premium knitting needles, crochet hooks, and knitting machines to customers in 59 different countries. In 2020, Thomas Selter (known as Mr. addi) handed over management to Claudia Malcus.
We are proud to be the only European manufacturer with a complete assortment of knitting needles and crochet hooks. Each of our products can require up to 25 manual production steps before completion. We continue to focus on quality, customer service, and innovation, bringing new products to market every year while maintaining our commitment to sustainable, German-made craftsmanship.
At the core of Addi is Proprietary seamless knotting technique connecting cord to needle tips without adhesives.
